Slow Sand Filtration
COURSE OVERVIEW
Slow sand filtration is a type of centralized or semicentralized water purification system. A well-designed and properly maintained slow sand filter (SSF) effectively removes turbidity and pathogenic organisms through various biological, physical and chemical processes in a single treatment step.
COURSE OUTLINE
Background. Evaluating technologies and basic design principles. Health aspects. How SSF works. Applicability, advantages, disadvantages of SSF. Construction of a Slow Sand Filter. Operation and maintenance. Managing the SSF. Slow sand filters – costs.
PREREQUISITE
None.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Water utility field staff, water utility construction inspectors, and water design personnel.
